Thassos
Thassos, the northernmost island of the Aegean Sea, with its wonderful natural scenery, lush vegetation, clear waters and golden beaches, is the ideal place for your holiday. It only takes a glance for the visitor to be enchanted by the picturesque trails, the lakes and the waterfalls of the island.The most famous beaches of Thassos are Paradisos (Paradise), Chrisi Ammos (Golden Beach) and Saliara, also known as Marble beach among foreign visitors. However, the visitor will also be amazed by the natural beauty, the golden sand and the crystal clear blue waters of other beaches such as Chrisi Akti (Gold Coast), Psili Ammos, Agios Antonios, Aliki, Tripiti, Skala Potamia, La Scala, Makryammos, Pefkari, Skala Rahiou, Giola (where a renowned magnificent natural pool is located, formed in the rocks next to the seaside and each sea wave slowly renews its crystal water) and many more. For those who love water sports we recommend Chrisi Ammoudia, Pefkari, Potos and Psili Ammos.

Limenas has always been the capital of the island; the visitor immediately realizes this as ancient remnants can be found everywhere. Among the most important archaeological sites, which are recommended to visit, are the ancient Agora (Forum), the ancient theatre, the sanctuaries of Heracles, Dionysus, Artemis and Poseidon, the Citadel (Acropolis), the ruins of the ancient city and ancient walls.
One can also visit the archaeological site on Aliki beach, which includes an ancient sanctuary (possibly dedicated to the Dioskouroi), two three-aisle basilicas from the fifth century AD and the ancient quarries of the famous Thassos marble, which was used to decorate parts of the Parthenon.
In search of the cultural identity and the sights of the island, visitors can tour the Archaeological Museum of Thassos, the Folklore Museum in Skala Potamias, the ruins of the Venetian castle, the Folklore Museum and the old mining quarries in Limenaria, as well as the museums in Kallirachi and Theologos. One can also visit several churches and monasteries.
Apart from sightseeing on the island, other marvellous options for the visitor include the train ride to the villages Skala Panagias, Skala Potamias as well as to Limenas, as well as the amazing re-enactment of the traditional "Thassitikos Gamos” (Thassos wedding). There is also an artificial lake in Maries, a great place for nature lovers that’s recommended for peaceful and quiet walks. The lake’s green surroundings offer unique moments of relaxation.
Strolling around Limenas town can be combined with shopping in beautiful traditional folk art shops, as well as with tasting the delightful local dishes in the central market and the port area.
Apart from Limenas, it is worth visiting the rest of the island’s picturesque villages, namely St. George, Aliki, Theologos, Kallirachi, the Castle, Kazaviti, Kinira, Limenaria and Panagia. At the end of your ride, don't forget to buy local products such as thyme honey, olives and traditional walnut candy.
